Eight Steps to More Self-Confidence
Many people struggle with self-confidence. This usually shows up when people are put into a position of stress, or when they are facing the unknown.
Very few people have self-confidence issues when they are operating in their comfort zone. If someone can have self-confidence in some situations, they should be able to develop the ability to have self-confidence in most situations. Here are some simple steps to give your self-confidence the boost that it needs.
Work to broaden your base of knowledge
When you find yourself in an area that you lack understanding, it will make you feel unsure of yourself. One of the keys to changing this is to learn about more topics. This will require you to read a lot to gain this knowledge. You can read books, newspapers and magazines, and you can read online about many topics. You do not need to become a leading authority on the subject, just learn enough to understand what people are talking about when discussing the topic. If you know that you will be hearing about several new subjects at the next meeting, study those subjects in advance. You will walk into the meeting feeling confident that you will not be the odd man out as the discussions proceed.
Learn new tasks and skills
It is not important that you master everything that comes along. If you can regularly add new skills to your abilities, you will gradually come to believe that you can at least learn enough to do most things if you apply yourself. This will prepare you for times when unexpected challenges present themselves. You will have the self-confidence to tackle whatever comes in your path.
Do a lot of small things that you know you can succeed at doing
The saying goes like this: “Nothing succeeds like success.” If you think you can do it, you probably can. When athletes practice, they often start with simple drills until they have the feel for the game. When these simple drills are performed well, it gives the athlete the confidence to step up to the more difficult challenges. You want to find ways to keep the wins coming at you. You will not win them all, but if you win enough, your self-confidence will soar.
Get others to help you do the job
Some things should not be done alone. The key is to surround yourself with people that can pick up your weak areas. This will let you move forward without having to do everything well. Give the things that you are not good at doing to someone who is. Your self-confidence will grow because you will see that your team can go much farther than you can go alone.
Learn from your mistakes
If you never make a mistake, it is because you never do anything. Everyone makes mistakes. Self-confidences grows from making mistakes and finding out that it does not knock you out of the race. Just get up and keep going forward. If you can see where you went wrong, learn not to go that way again.
Find some friends that will encourage you rather than criticize
We all need some criticism now and then. Most of us get too much of it. You need to choose friends who want you to succeed. find people who will tell you when you have done a good job even if it is small. People need to hear that they do some things well to have the confidence to try to do more. If you have those around you who only know how to point out your faults, distance yourself from them and find new friends.
Learn to dress better
Clothes make the man. Even though this is not exactly true, knowing that you look good makes you feel good. When you feel good, you are far more self-confident. Extend this to improving your overall appearance. It will boost your self-confidence to knew levels.
Take some time off to rest and relax
One of the signs of burnout is that you begin to lose your self-confidence. Getting away and doing something you enjoy will recharge your batteries. This will make you feel better. With your mind and body refreshed, it will be easier to have the confidence to take on those daunting tasks.
