Emotion Management; How to Supervise and Harmonize Our Emotions for Maximum Performance

It was undoubtedly a good thing that our forefathers of prehistoric days were a fearful lot-otherwise we might not be here now. But a wise nature did us a good turn by building a rapid response fear mechanism in primitive man-or else he might not have survived. The only trouble is that she was so completely satisfied with her job that she declined to make changes during subsequent ages. The flash of lighting and the roll of thunder terrified the early man. He was beset by danger of every kind. Wild beasts, huge reptiles, poisonous snakes and insects abounded. Eclipses and shooting stars excited his dread. Today, of course, wherever peace prevails, the picture is vastly different. Modern man mastered electricity and made it a faithful servant and friend. Wild animals, except in some areas, no longer occasion alarm.

Today, of course, wherever peace prevails, the picture is vastly different. Modern man mastered electricity and made it a faithful servant and friend. Wild animals, except in some areas, no longer occasion alarm. Dangers still exist today. But it is of such a nature that we can usually avoid it by the exercise of reasonable care and prudence. Yet man of modern time still equipped with his prehistoric bodily mechanism which instantly reacts to the emotions. And as a result, the psychologists, parapsychologists and psychiatrists of today are kept busy. Vast hospitals and similar institutions dot the country-all because Nature will not concede that man, at least is civilized!

Properly and intelligently used-fear is today a true friend of mankind. But it must always be kept under rigid control or else it will work to our serious disadvantage. Fear is like fire. It can be a valuable helpmate and companion, but if it is allowed to take under liberties and get out of bounds, it can be a veritable demon of destruction. Dread of being lonesome has induced man to establish communal centers, nations, great cities, towns and villages. Legislatures, halls of justice, hospitals, insurance companies, churches and the like are the outcome of the prudent and wholesome fear. Strangely enough, much of work done by all such organizations is devoted to dealing with the abnormal fear, the foe of man, which has caused such misery, crime and violence. Thus fear, and the other emotions, proves to be friendly or inimical, according to the manner in which they are used. It is certainly deplorable that modern man does not understand these emotions and their intelligent management!
