Ending Self-Punishment Through Self-forgiveness (Self-Hypnosis)

Extract from "Powerful Mind through Self-Hypnosis" by International Bestselling Author Cathal O’Briain.

Self forgiveness stops us from constantly internalizing with critical judgment and helps us to keep moving forward. If an individual hurts you in some way, you have a risk of harboring thoughts of hate towards that person. Such thoughts are natural and understandable, but should not be left to grow inside. In the end, these thoughts will only leave you feeling angry and guilty. This is because they make you feel that you are bad for having a desire to hate or even harm the perpetrator. Here you have a choice: you can go on hating and feeling resentment towards this person, allowing them to destroy your self-image; or you can forgive yourself for having such thoughts, thus letting go of them completely. If you choose the latter, then the memory of them hurting you, as well as the emotion of you hating them, will no longer have substance through resentment; instead they will find release through forgiveness.

Induction No. 8: Releasing and Forgiving

Note: This exercise will help you forgive and release if you can allow every suggestion to work for you. If you experience any difficulty in letting go of past hurts after several attempts, then seek out a competent hypnotherapist to assist you in this important process.

Concentration Phase
Lie down and fix your eyes at a point on the ceiling.
Take 10 deep breaths while staring at the point on the ceiling.
Take 10 more deep breaths only this time incorporating the suggestion, calm and relaxed, while you breathe with positive suggestion.
When you have completed the breaths, close your eyes.

Deepening Phase
Inhale and say 10 in your mind. Exhale and say, so calm.
Inhale and say 9 in your mind. Exhale and say, so relaxed.
Inhale and say 8 in your mind. Exhale and say, deeper and deeper.
Inhale and say 7 in your mind. Exhale and say, deeper and deeper.
Until the count of 0 continue saying, deeper and deeper.
On reaching 0 say, I am more deeply relaxed than ever before.

Imagery Phase
Recall to mind the memory of an event that caused you hurt. Dissociate yourself by becoming like an older brother or sister to child self. As an observer, say to your inner-child “I’m here to help you through this.” As if watching a play, view it in as much detail from the beginning to end. If you feel emotion, allow it surface (talk, cry, release it). If there are guilty parties concerned, causing you hurt, let them know how you feel as an older and wiser observer about what is happening to your younger self. When you are done expressing yourself, say to them “I forgive you.” Now forgive yourself for holding onto the memory for so long. Say to your inner-child, “I am always here for you, to protect and take care of you.”

Apply Suggestions
“I have forgiven them.”
“I have forgiven myself.”
“I give myself permission to release and let go of this memory.”

Implantation Phase
Just let go for a while and allow your mind to drift deeper into hypnosis. Allow the important suggestions and images you have instilled in your mind to be digested and programmed into you.

Termination
Bring an end to the session as you have learned. Then sit up and take a deep breath.

Letting go of past hurts by forgiving ourselves and others requires courage, patience and sometimes a little bit more. Only you can measure the depth of your pain; or how long it’s going to take you to heal. The hurt attached to memory often remains long after the first experience of the original event. Self-hypnosis helps you to minimize the effects of trauma by strengthening the bond between your conscious and subconscious mind. The past is stored in the present. When you imagine something, whether a future desire or the memory of a past event, the subconscious reacts as though it is in the present. In other words, remembering past events often makes us react as though the event is happening all over again in the present. Because of this, it is in the present where you must heal the past.

“Forgiveness is the fragrance the violet sheds on the heel that has crushed it.” Mark Twain
