Fear
An article about different fears and how to overcome them.
Have you always wanted to do something like going on a big and scary looking rollercoaster but were too afraid to do so? If you have you are not alone many people have been through this. This is called fear, in this case you are afraid of the big and scary looking rollercoaster. Specific fears are called phobias and are usually end in the word phobia. There are many different types of fears. The more common ones are Nyctophobia, the fear of the dark, Arachnophobia, fear of spiders, or Insectophobia, Fear of insects. Now there are also some very weird and strange phobias but they are all true. Some of these are Apeirophobia, Fear of infinity, Nomatophobia, fear of names, or even Arachibutyrophobia, the fear of peanut butter sticking to the roof of your mouth!
Fear is an emotion that humans get when they are afraid of something like say… The rollercoaster breaking down on a loop and you falling off, this can cost you your life. This is the fear of get harmed. For all of the people that have been on a rollercoaster know that even if the machine does break down there are bars or handles to keep you in and that each coaster has to meet a certain safety standard. Like this most fears are exaggerated and are not that bad at all. One really good example is walking on fire! (This is when someone walks on glowing hot cinders and lives to tell the tale! This is actually quite safe and if anything will only tingle your feet!)
Another type of fear people may have is the fear of failing. Like messing up when giving a speech. (I hope I don’t do that!) Now most people know that their friends, family or classmates won’t laugh at them which can boost their confidence-Like if I mess up you won’t laugh at me. Right? This type of fear stops people from doing many things they always wanted to do.
Now there are ways you too can overcome your fears! One way is doing things that are safe but somehow related to your fear. For example if you are afraid of drowning in water but you have always wanted to swim you could get a shallow pool and practice in it. You can also have a TRUSTED friend that you know will save you nearby (The word TRUSTED is very important). If you are afraid of giving a speech you could practice in a mirror or in front of dolls and eventually practice in front of family and get their opinion on your speech.
There is one last thing. Some people suggest fear can be good for without it you could end up getting into serious trouble or hurting yourself. For example you would take on any challenge and blow stuff up.
So until you are brave enough to ride on the big coaster try the kiddy coaster instead!
