- Making the first move. Approaching a stranger can be a daunting task–especially if he or she is a VIP. Try to relax and remember that however intimidating they are, they’re only people. - Paying and accepting compliments. It never hurts to give compliments. It’s free and the payoff is rewarding to both sides. One cardinal rule to remember in giving compliments is to make sure you mean it. If you happen to be on the receiving end, chuck false modesty and stick with the basic “thank you.”
- The skinny on small talk. Never underestimate the relevance of small talk. Although topics may range from trivial to trite, it’s usually during this kind if conversation where you establish connection. The point is not really what you are saying to each other but the fact that you are establishing ties with one another.
- Leaving a good impression. There are only a couple of people you can’t “get” at hello. First impressions do last but it’s better to create a lasting impression. How? Be polite, sincere and don’t do all the talking. There’s nothing worse than being “me, me, me” all night.
