Five Simple Rules of Self Defense
Personal safety!
You can never be certain today will be a safe and uneventful day. Everyday things happened, someone somewhere is caught off guard. However, by following a few simple steps you can improve your odds of successfully protecting yourself if that truly bad day ever happens to you.
- React – The first step to warding off a physical attack is the conscience decision to fight back. Knowing before hand that you will do whatever it takes to protect yourself physically is the most important self-defense technique you will need.
- Know your Targets – Wildly punching, hitting or kicking will only escalate the attack or abuse. Deliberately aim for soft targets: Eyes, throat and groin.
- Attack your Attacker – Turn the attack around. Once you have softened your attackers grip continue attacking with knees, elbows and stomps. Again focus on soft targets: Groin, ribs, eyes, knees, shins and feet.
- Know your Escape – Once your attacker is down you will have roughly 3 seconds to reach a safe place. If you are not 100% positive that you can reach a safe place in that short amount of time, you MUST be prepared to further incapacitate your attacker. Stomping on knees, ankles or kicking the groin are good ways to insure you have a few more seconds to escape if needed.
- Avoidance – The best self-defense technique is to avoid potentially dangerous situations. Avoid dark or unlighted areas; keep your hands free and your senses alive. Avoid using cell phones or ipods while walking, travel in pairs, use security at night when available, keep doors to homes and cars locked. Always be aware. Know who and what is going on around you. Most days are carefree and uneventful, by being aware of your surrounding you can help guarantee everyday will be a safe day.
