Five Social Turn-offs and How to Avoid Them
There are really some things about your body, whether you had them since birth, or just acquired recently that can ruin the life of the party. Sometimes, people who have them don’t even recognize that it’s partly the reason why people are turning away. Let me tell you about some of them.
- Dandruff (Scientific Term: Scurf). Often characterized by excessive shedding of dead skin cells from the scalp, or more commonly known as flaking, if you’re wearing a black shirt, this condition is not a likeable sight. Flaking is actually normal at a certain level, but excessive flaking is not good. Unfortunately, most men and women are affected with this. This is commonly brought about by a fungal infection, and is sometimes triggered by too much stress, an allergic reaction to hair chemicals or extreme climate. Treatment can be achieved by using regularly anti-dandruff shampoo that contain zinc pyrithione, seleniumsulfide or ketoconazole.
- Bad Breath (Scientific Term: Halitosis). Temporary causes include eating certain foods such as garlic, onions, etc. Lack of oxygen while sleeping causes what we know as morning breath. Of course, it all happens in the mouth. When you brush less or don’t clean the back area of your tongue, bacteria can produce a “rotten egg” smell, now we don’t want that. The most obvious cure is of course brushing your teeth, rinsing with mouthwash, flossing, mints or gum.
- Stinky Armpits (Scientific Term: Bromhidrosis). Commonly caused by frequent eating of certain foods such as onions and other spices, it also becomes obvious if you don’t take a bath often, causing bacterial activity in your armpits. Intensive sweating is also one reason, so make sure you change clothes after exercising. To eliminate the smell, wash with anti-bacterial soap, apply deodorant daily after every bath, and if it doesn’t work consult a dermatologist.
- Sweaty Hands (Scientific Term: Palmar Hyperhidrosis). Major reason for this is hereditary background. But for others this is set off by stress, nervousness, and anxiety. There are permanent and temporary cures for this such as Endoscopic surgery (light procedure), oral medication, and antiperspirants.
- Smelly Feet (Scientific Term: Malodorous). It’s normal for our feet to sweat, however when our footwear is closed, it blocks the air to dry our feet. Bacterial activity starts there. Other causes include stress and hormones. Prevention tips include the following: wash and dry your feet thoroughly before wearing shoes, apply foot powder, and wear thicker socks made of wool or cotton.
