Five Things to Do with Your Mates When Your on a Budget

by AmusedByLife in Advice, April 16, 2008

Ideas to solve your boredom problems made easy.

We’ve all been there, your sat around with your mates, your all broke because it’s the end of the month, you’ve spend all your money and pay-day seems to far away to bear thinking about. So what do you do? This was a dilemma faced by us many a time. So talking from experience here are a few of the solutions we came up with and thoroughly enjoyed doing!

  1. Go camping

There’s bound to be a good place that you and your mates can disappear to every now and then with a tent and a tin of beans (and some cans of lager) My mates and I know of a beautiful place that not many others know about and at least 3 times a year we will go there – I’ve had some of my fondest memories from my teenage years sat around a camp fire and I’m not necessarily an outdoorsy-type. Back a couple of years ago, we asked one of the guys to put the cans in the river behind some rocks to cool them down (now normally you secure them in a carrier bag) he wasn’t blessed with intelligence but naturally you would assume that this is a task even your 2 year old brother would be able to cope with. But oh no, he actually put them in the river in the cardboard box. Needless to say we all spent the next hour fishing out cans from the river bed. Still makes me chuckle now.

  2. Play Poker

You don’t necessarily need to play for money or you could just use small coins to act as chips. This is a good one, because there’s always at least one person who can’t grasp the concept of the game. You just need a bunch of your mates, some cards and if you’ve got one, a poker table always helps but is not essential. If you don’t know how to play it – get the instructions online, “Texas Hold “em’ is the best one to learn for beginners.

  3. Go to the Beach

Ok, this one is a little unfair as not everyone has access to a beach…… However, I use to think that until we all went exploring one summer and we came across a fantastic little beach that we will probably never be able to find again – but it doesn’t really matter because the likelihood of getting a day hot enough this year is looking doubtful. Good old Wales!

  4. Car Hide and Seek

I’ve never confessed to being an eco-queen and with recent articles in the press refuting people who use up fuel needlessly, I can’t help but think is one may be frowned upon. However, I am simply re-living my years gone by and what my mates and I have done to entertain ourselves when on a budget. This one is pretty funny, you need a minimum of two cars (obviously, but more is better) map out a section of your local town you can hide within (If you don’t do this then you will literally be searching for your mates for years) and away you go! You can set your own rules but we normally just go for it. Some of the little nooks and crannies I have had to reverse my car out of don’t even bear thinking about…

  5. Do Some Charity Work

Stay with me while I explain myself. If you can round up enough of your mates and are all reasonably fit and well, why not speak to your local authorities and see what work is going on in your local area? You can all go out spend a day doing something worthwhile – while having a laugh with your mates, and it’s awesome to put on your CV so everyone’s a winner! I have to admit, I’ve done this twice in my life but wish I had done it more, we ended up digging up a local waste ground to plant greenery and “pretty it up” it was back-breaking but so rewarding in the end. I also had to co-ordinate a “duck-race” for a local charity. We managed to raise over £500. Also, fishing 1000 rubber ducks out of the lake at the end and sorting through them is the most fun EVER!
