Five Ways to Improve a Negative Mood
Feeling depressed or sad is natural, but learning how to change these moods before they become destructive is important.
Our moods are directly affected by people and circumstances surrounding us, and controlling the moods or changing them when negativity abounds can be difficult and sometimes, seem impossible. How do you get rid of a bad, depressed, or emotional mood?
It is imperative that you understand that sometimes experiencing periods of sadness or depression is normal since it is how our minds adapt to emotional situations or changes in our lives. When the periods of low or negative feelings last over an extended period of time is when they become highly self-destructive and we run the risk of learning to accept them as normal and constant feelings which translate into constant depression or constant anger, etc.
Most people are not taught how to deal with their emotions and moods, and understanding how to do this is necessary for our peace of mind. A good rule of thumb to keep in mind is any negative feeling that lasts for more than 20 seconds should be acknowledged, not repressed. Often we find these emotions dredging up feelings and thoughts from other situations which can be unhealthy and serve to intensify the depression or sadness.
Learning how to implement these 5 simple techniques for improving your moods is the start of learning to love yourself and appreciate your multi-faceted personality that makes you so amazing.
Think Of Love
Try taking at least a minute, completely to yourself, and relax. Closing your eyes, picture the faces of people, or one special person, that love you. Remember the love, evident in their eyes, and focus on that feeling of warmth that shines through their gentle smile.
Physical Activity
Scientifically proven, physical activity releases endorphins that significantly affect our state of mind, health, and overall well being. Sometimes taking a walk can mean the difference between tears or calmness. Do not use this option as punishment, but rather as an outlet for negativity.
Indulge In Sensory Journey
Our sense of smell can be one of the quickest ways to charge our emotions in a positive manner. By smelling something that reminds you of a happy time, or memory, you can almost immediately change your mood.
Control Your Thoughts
Sometimes grief must be addressed and experienced for the healing to begin, but intense negative thoughts can only serve to deepen the well of negative emotion, hurting us and causing lasting emotional damage. Try to keep your thoughts focused on what is actually important, and think on something positive.
Laughter is Great Medicine
Laughter truly is a gift to humanity. Try to find something that makes you laugh, such as a great friend, a good movie, book, or something else that can have a positive affect on your emotions.
Indulging in yourself and your sense of worth is something that everyone should do. If we cannot learn to take special care of ourselves and our fragile emotions, we could become self-destructive in the long run. Take the time to investigate your emotions and moods, know yourself, love yourself. You are definitely worth it!
