Five Ways to Make People Like You in Under 30 Seconds
Leaving a good impression is an invaluable skill. Without it, you can say goodbye to a job, a date, or even a prospective friend. With a little practice, you can learn to always leave someone dazzled, even if your interaction lasts under a minute!
- Look your best. Like it or not, appearance plays a huge part in a first impression. So when you leave the house every day, it’s best to always dress as if you’re going to run into an ex or your boss. Because chances are, the very day that you step out of the house in sweats and uncombed hair, you will run into someone you know.
- Keep in mind the group of people you want to impress. If you’re looking to land a job, a professional attitude is going to help you. If you’re a teenager looking to make friends, a casual appearance and demeanor is more appropriate.
- Be yourself, just better. It sounds harsh, but during your first interaction with someone, they’re already doing some harsh judgement on you. You don’t want to give them the wrong impression of your personality, but you don’t want to be offensive and scare them off. If you’re usually more subdued, try a little harder to be outgoing and friendly. If you’re normally a wild and out there personality, pull it back a little and try being calm and charming. You’ll be amazed at how much a balanced personality will appeal to others.
- Use active listening. People like talking, and even more than that, they like knowing that they’re being heard. When first meeting someone, listen closely to what they’re saying, comment on it, and ask questions.
- Use appropriate body language. Don’t give them a stare down and a psycho killer grin, but making eye contact every few seconds and a friendly smile will go a long way towards making someone like you. If you’re teaching a class or giving a presentation, make eye contact with someone in each corner of the room in turn. If you’re looking to score a date, give them a lingering glance or touch. Use hand gestures and be expressive.
