Food and Beer Pairings

Choosing the right beer to go with your food.

Image via Wikipedia

If you’re new to food and beer pairing, this guide will get you started.

Salads and Vegetable Dishes:

Choose a Brown, Golden or Blonde ale, wheat beer or Belgian White Lager or Pilsner

Fish

These beers are good choices when fish (not shellfish) is on the menu:

Bitter, Golden or Blonde ales, IPA, and Pale ales all go well with fish. If you prefer a lager, try a Bock, Dunkel or Vienna Style.  If vegetables will be served on the side, then a Golden or Blonde ale would be an excellent choice.

Shellfish

Oatmeal Stout, Porter or Stout.

Chicken Dishes

Amber and Brown Ales. Or try Bock, Dunkel or Vienna Style lagers. Veggies and salad on the side? Go with a Brown ale.

Beef and Burgers

There are lots of good options here, all of them ales. Amber, Bitter and Brown ales, Oatmeal Stout, Porter, Pale ale and Stout are the best beer choices.

Surf and Turf

Serve Oatmeal Stout, Porter or Stout.

Pizza

Amber, Golden or Blonde ales, or a Vienna Style Lager. Golden and Blonde ales pair well with both spicy meats and vegetables.

Cheeses

Mild cheeses go best with a Pale ale or Weissbier.

Strong Cheeses are better with Barley Wine, Brown Ale, Oatmeal Stout, Porter or Stout.

Spicy Food

Belgium Abbey, Brown, Golden, Blonde or Pale ales and Weissbier.
