Four Things to Do at The End of Summer

As summer ends, there are a lot of things to do still…

When the summer begins to wane, and the days are slowly getting a little less hot it’s time to go outside and enjoy yourself. If you’ve been hiding from the heat, the sun, and the sunburns; now is the time to go out and enjoy yourself. There are a ton of things to do outaside at the end of summer, and the more people you get into it the better. The family has been in the house too long, now is the time to take the whole family outside and enjoy the togetherness as well as all of the fun that just hanging out with eachother as a family can be. Here are 4 great things to do witht he whole family or any group of friends that you can get together during the edge of summer and the begining of Autumn.

The watermelons begin to come down in price and it’s great getting a huge watermelon for a cheap price. It’s one of the few items that you feel that you actually got your money’s worth. For this item though you’ll have to buy a seeded watermelon. Never mind the large amount of things you can do with watermelons, recipes for watermelons, and fun little designs you can cut them into. The best part about watermelons are the seeds. Make sure everyone saves their seeds, and when you’re done eating the watermelon the real fun begins. Why not get everyone into a good old seed spitting contest. Kids are always told not to spit, so they will get into this even more. Take some paper tape, or even just markers like shoes and such and mark out the distance. If you’re playing with little ones, make each of the markers about a foot apart. For older groups, make each one a few feet in distance. Then start spitting.

Lightening bugs, or glow bugs, begin to come out. they’ve been out all summer, but they come out in force in most of the northern regions pf the US. Go out and see the night light up, as well as the faces of everyone who is participating, as the bugs come out. Light bugs just seem to put a smile on everyone’s face. Take a old jar, or container of some sort, that has a lid and punch holes int he lid. You can also use a piece of saran wrap or tin foil to serve as a lid. Make sure that there are holes in the lid or you will kill the poor bugs. Let the fun begin. Have a contest to see who can catch the most. At the end of the night, stand in a circle and let them all go. Watching all of the bugs take off is like watching a shooting star show.

Get out the old trash bags or the potato sacks. If you can get a hold of the old potato sacks that’s great, but if not just use a huge garden size trash bag, the more sturdy the better. If you’re using a trash bag, they’re going to break so make the course a little shorter. Set up a finish and a start, climb in the bags, and start hopping. This is a game that will have people falling, breaking through bags, and generally loving the time they’re having.

Finally, do something crazy and new since you have the ability to go outside. Take your TV and DVD player out of that old entertainment center. Pop a huge amount of pop corn, put in a great old DVD that everyone likes, or rent one, and set the TV up outside. Just pop it on a table, it’s not going to stay there forever. Tell everyone to grab a chair, or grab the couch and move it outside. Now that everyone has popcorn, a place to sit, and a TV – you’re ready to have your own make shift outside movie night. This is a memory a child will remember forever, and a tiem you’ll not soon forget.
