Four Tips to Get Rid of Worry Effectively

This article explains why we worry, what happens to us when we worry and useful tips on how to get rid of this bad habit that can destroy our life.

Many people tend to worry about things, whether these are financial, health-related, or in anticipation of some unfortunate event. Just what can it do to you? Is there really a need to worry at all?

Why do we worry?

We worry primarily because of the lack of knowledge of the future and fear of man’s limited capacity. According to Edward Hallowell, a psychiatrist, worry comes from vulnerability and powerlessness. This may be a result of situations such as simple shyness, depression, general anxiety, distress over the actions of another, and post-traumatic disorder.

What happens when we worry?

The following are the things that happen to you when you worry.

1. Your mind is troubled and therefore stressed. When the mind is not at peace, the mind is not rested and is not able to think well, causing stress. According to a study conducted by the University College London (UCL), sudden cardiac death can occur due to emotional stress. Emotional stress causes the brain to send uneven signals from the brain to the heart.

2. You have difficulty sleeping. Because of the incessant preoccupation of thinking about things, the thinking process cannot be easily stopped. I experienced this myself. Even drugs aimed to provide relaxation only temporarily shut it off.

3. Your appetite is affected. People who worry tend to overeat or eat junk food and eventually become fat. This will be an added worry. Or some people could not eat well, leading to malnutrition.

4. You can become ill. Excessive worrying can cause your body to release a stress hormone cortisol. Cortisol causes physical reactions such as difficulty swallowing, dizziness, fatigue, headaches, muscle aches, nausea, shortness of breath, among others.

5. You will tend to age faster. According to Porter and Landfield, the stress hormone glucocorticoid is known to speed up aging of the brain. Glucocorticoids are known to promote the death of neurons. These hormones may also contribute to hippocampal atrophy during normal human aging and increases vulnerability to Alzheimer’s disease. And of course, worrying cause you to look haggard and older.

Thank you for your work and research on this topic. A common one amongst busy lifestyles. I appreciate the time you put in.
I never truly thought about the statement/philosophy ‘we akways have a choice not to worry’. I like this perspective. It allows worriers to gain control over their worrying, instead of the other way around.

Thanks for your feedback EJ. This perspective of choice really helped me a lot so I shared that philosophy. We do not have control over how things occur. If we apply the 80-20 rule, we have control over only 20% of what we do 80% of the time. But we always have the POWER OF CHOICE. We can think out of the box.
