Good Table Etiquette

It is very important for everyone to observe proper table manner or etiquette. This will make you well-mannered and socially pliable. Here are some useful tips and suggestions for proper table manners.

  1. Be well groomed when you come to the table. It is unpleasant for others to see uncombed hair, an unclean face, or dirty hands, fingernails and clothing.
  2. Come to the table promptly when called. It is discourteous to make others wait for you and it is thoughtless of the person who prepared the meal.
  3. Wait for others instead of rushing to the table ahead of them. When there are older or more important persons, permit them to precede you at the table.
  4. Be seated only after all have assembled at the table, and then sit down from the left side of your chair. In this way, there is no confusion, as is the case if some sit down from one side and some from the other side of the chair.
  5. If you are a man or a boy, help the women and girls to be seated. This is done by gently pushing the chair as the lady on your right sits down.
  6. If it is the family custom to say grace at the table, sit or stand quietly while it is being said.
  7. Wait to eat until all have been served.
  8. Sit erect and do not slump or loll on the table, lean against it with your arm, or rest your elbow on the table. Your left hand should rest on your lap when not in use.
  9. Keep your elbows close to your sides as you eat so as not to interfere with someone next to you. Even when there is ample room, it looks better to keep your elbows close to your side rather than spreading them out like wings.
  10. Be observant of the needs of others. See that food is passed to them. Do not serve yourself first, unless the hostess asks you to do so, because it is selfish and indicates that you feel more important than the others. When food is passed to you, accept it and serve yourself in turn.
  11. Apologize in the event of an accident, and then try to forget your disaster. Such an occurrence is likely to happen to anyone, and excessive talk about it cannot change the situation and only emphasizes it more.
  12. Use a handkerchief only when absolutely necessary and then do so as unobtrusively as possible.
  13. Keep your hand away from your face and hair.
  14. Do not argue or quarrel. Serenity when eating contributes to good digestion. Listen to others when they are talking, but make some contribution to the conversation yourself.
