How Best to Deal with The Elephant in The Room
Have you ever found yourself having a conversation with someone when there was an obvious issue that wasn’t being addressed? These situations are awkward, annoying, and usually uncomfortable for both parties. Find out the best way to deal with these sorts of situations.
Always try to avoid a confrontational approach. Even if you feel completely justified in doing so, it only leads to headaches down the road. Sure you feel satisfied for a small fraction of time, but most often you come off looking like an ass. More-over, you will usually be blinded by fury which can cause situations to escalate. It is doubtful that the person will apologize to you if you are in there face anyways, so it is best to avoid this tactic. Instead consider perhaps having a close friend act as a spy for you, collecting information from the individual in question and then reporting back to you on what he has discovered. This is a rather good alternative.
The Excuse:
If you find that it is inescapable and that you must talk with him, have a good and seemingly legitimate reason why you might need to leave. You might want to preface the conversation with this fact. Simply saying, “I need to run off soon” will suffice in allow you that valuable escape opportunity. That way you don’t need to worry about hearing his chatter for too long and if you leave it is less awkward on the both of you. The longer the conversation runs the longer the awkward feelings will last and the more chance he has to address the problem. Get out and get out quick.
If he or she brings it up:
Lets say he or she brings it up and you either are still upset at him or do not wish to discuss it. The best way to address that is by simply saying those feelings plainly. Something like “I still feel strongly about this topic and I don’t think it is in our best interest to continue in this direction” said with a smile will do just fine. That way you clearly assert that you do not feel that you are in the wrong here nor do you appreciate it being brought up. The smile helps make it appear friendly on the surface, however no one will be able to overlook the true message that statement brings.
Conclusion:
There are several ways to deal with problems such as these. When there are clearly elephants in the room don’t allow yourself to do common mistakes. Follow my advice and you will be well on your way. Is there any tactics that you use? Or perhaps you disagreed with a point in my list? Comment below!
