If a person consumes alcohol excessively it leads to hang over. In the result, the concerned person loses his physical and mental balance; he suffers from head ache and a feeling of sickness throughout the day.
In countries like India, especially in the rural areas, it is a common sight that people who have consumed illicit alcohol or liquor excessively falter on the ground, walk rather unsteadily, use a filthy and a highly vituperative language against a person who tries to control him, sometimes even vomit on the person who helps him or guide him; their story does not end there. In the absence of any help, such persons falter on their way and lay there unconscious hours together unmindful of the place they were lying. Some persons who manage to reach their home, simply go to bed and fall asleep hours together, without taking any food; in the result their health deteriorates; family suffers; children get spoiled.
In some other extreme cases, such persons under the influence of liquor regularly pick up quarrels with their spouses without any rhyme or reason; even beat them heavily, thereby forcing them to desert their husband; in some cases it lead to an irretrievable breakdown of their marriage and the estranged wife even elope with some other persons and begin her life afresh. It is equally pathetic to note that such incorrigible liquor addicts lose their virility and become sterile; so they are unable to satisfy the legitimate sexual desires of their spouses, thereby forcing them to commit adultery.
The root cause for all the above said social evils is addiction to alcohol or consuming it excessively resulting in a hangover.
If a person remains a teetotaler, it is well and good and there is no reason to worry about; there is no scope for any addiction or hangover.
But in countries where people are inured to the habit of consuming liquor as part of their life style, it is quite common they have a dilemma of how to avoid a hangover.
The key to avoiding hangover remains in moderation. If a person frequently suffers from hangover, it is a danger signal that he oversteps the limit or crosses the line of moderation. In fact hangover actually acts as a deterrent for a person quite often forcing him towards moderation.
If a person frequently suffers from hangover, it means that he has become an addict; the concerned person has to take serious steps like getting counseling from an expert and remain under his treatment for sometime under his supervision.
Some people suggest an easy way of avoiding hangover. If a person has the constant urge for drinking excessively, he can resort to taking water or any cool drink which are non-alcoholic.
Such persons, who have the problem of hangover, should always be in the company of men; if it is office, he should always be in the midst of his colleagues; if it is his residence it is always good to be in the company of his wife or children or resort to reading good books.
If a person has the urge for having liquor at home, it is always good to have it under the supervision of his spouse and see that he never crosses the line of moderation.
Thus a person who is in the habit of drinking alcohol or any other liquor is always facing a risk and he is constantly under the threat of hangover. In order to avoid such hangovers, he should be moderate in his drinking habits; otherwise his life will be a nightmare for him.

The Irish are renowned drinkers, though I have been in many countries where they would out do us. Trying to keep a balance is important but for some people one drink is enough to make them lose control. Non alcoholic drinks are a good way of drinking in company without the chance of getting drunk.

The hangover will pass. Alcohol poisoning may not. More than two drinks in 24 hours and a person is asking for trouble.
