How to Catch a Liar

by Craig in Advice, November 1, 2007

Here are eight ways to identify a liar.

  1. Observe the person’s eye movements. If he stops eye contact with you, starts blinking unnaturally, or has shaking pupils, then suspect the worst!
  2. Concentrate on the person’s answers to questions. Take note on how long he needs to answer the question. An honest person should answer quickly and a liar should stutter to think of an idea for a lie.
  3. Monitor the person’s throat to see if he is swallowing to evade the pressure build up.
  4. Pay attention to that person’s phrasing: not using direct answers, speaking in jumbled sentences, saying the same words or facts over and over again or attempting to change the subject.
  5. Examine his forehead and armpits for sweat. Folks usually sweat when they lie.
  6. See how the person is reacting to questions. Liars may turn their head or body away from you or put an object in between you because they feel guilty or want to hide their facial expression.
  7. Check to see if the person is over-defensive (raising of voice, making a scene, over reacting).
  8. Liars may start twitching, have unusual hand positioning and frequently touch his face.

These comments are utter nonsense. The science on the subject supplies different insights than these superficial and juvenile guesses. Look up the work of experts in the area, professors Paul Ekman and Bella DePaulo, for instance. Also, Phillip Maltin a lawyer in Los Angeles seems to know a lot. No one, however, should rely on the empty guesses in this article.

Some of this may be true, but it can also singnify nervousness. One way to identify a good liar, they need to have a good memory!

Of course this isn’t 100% accurate. These are just tips to spotting anything that sounds ridiculous. If you really want to catch a liar, listen to the way the person says what they are saying. Facial expressions can be missleading. Reference? An episode of the People Watchers.
