How to Cure Boredom in Summer
Although children all count down the days until summer vacation, a few weeks later they are all bored out of their minds, climbing up the walls, and desperately trying to fight off those hot-summer blues. The good news is, there IS a cure!
- Flour
- Water
- Salt
- Food coloring and/or paint (optional)
Alright, basically you mix everything together except for the food coloring. Let the kids have a good time playing with dough, they will probably turn as white as a ghost but that is the fun of being young. Then, let them build whatever they want. A house, a cup, a paper weight (it’ll look similar to a blob or a colorful rock), whatever their little hearts desire. If they want their creation to be colorful than they can add food coloring to the dough before they start contruction or they can wait for it to harden and they can paint it. After they are al finished, pop them in the oven and wait for them to harden. 1, 2, 3 DONE!
Activity THREE: Slime and slide
I know, this is the third activity that involves making a mess. I’m sorry. But time flies when you’re having fun, right?
Supplies:
- Corn starch
- Water
- Food coloring
- Tarp
I know a lot of slime recipies call for borax, but I have found that it is not necessary. Just mix ingredients togeth and you have slime! I suggest each child making a big bucket full. The amount you make is really up to you. Add as much water as you want there to be slime and then add everything else. If children make big buckets than they can all use it on the make shift slip-and-slide (a tarp layed on the ground). You may want to add some water to the tarp using the hose if it is a humid day. Otherwise they will just sqweeeeeek their way across the tarp and then they will be as red as a lobster and you’ll have to take care of them. That would be no fun for either participant. So, use your parental instincts on that one. Again, if you would prefer, the kids can make outfits out of bags and they can spray themselves with the hose first so that they can gain some speed. (WARNING: stay clear of even little rocks on the ground or shrubs. Even with the tarp over them they can still be hazardous.)
Activity FOUR:
This summer my boys have decided that board games are BORING. So, we make up our own.
Supplies:
- A plushy ball
- Sidewalk chalk
- Creative minds
Have each child come up with about five to ten different things that are funny to do. Examples would be dance like a chicken, skip like a girl, pretend you’re a dog, ect. The level of hilarity is determined by the children. You should get about twenty different ideas for this activity. Number each activity and then go out to your drive way, a quiet street, a parking lot, wherever and put those numbers sparatically on the ground with circles around them. Next, decide where the start line is going to be. Then, each child takes turns throwing the ball and doing whichever activity they land on. I suggest a camera to take pictures because these are moments that your child will never forget. And their smiles are definantly something to document.
