How to Deal with Being Put on The Spot
What to do when faced with tricky encounters and difficult conversations.
When you’re hit with a question you haven’t prepared for such as “Why haven’t you finished that report” it can be hard to come up with the right answer, you’re simply too nervous. But there are ways to keep your cool and get through with your dignity intact.
Take responsibility if you have made a mistake. Don’t grovel, just say that you are sorry and it won’t happen again. If you’ve been asked something you don’t understand or can’t put in the right context ask for more information so you know what your walking into. Honesty will serve you well in these situations, so don’t be afraid to speak up.
If you are at a loss as to what to say, take your time. Avoid blurting out the first thing that comes into your head. Say something like “Can I get back to you on that” or “Is it alright if I think about that for a second”.
It’s hard to answer a tricky question when the question is broad or vague. Ask the person to be more specific. This will give your more time to formulate the right answer. Look beyond the question and try to think about what’s brought it on. Is the person upset about something else? If so casullay address that in your response and they may just simmer down.
Don’t be scared to fire back your own questions. This will give you more control over the situation and will help keep the discussion constructive. You’ll also learn more about what you can do to avoid situations like this in the first place.
