How to Get Rid of Snow in Geiranger

There is lots of snow in Geiranger but how do you get rid of it. I wil tell you how thay did it in the old days.

As you know by now there is a lot of snow in Geiranger, but how do you get rid of it? This has always been a problem for the road workers since the road was built.

At the end of the last centre it took road workers 6 to 8 weeks to open the road. The only tool they used were a spade and that was it. It was vary hard work and it didn’t help that everyone in the village wanted the road to be opened as soon as possible. The road worker used a technique called soiling. The first thing they did was they filled up over 100 small wooden sheds with black soil in the summertime. When the spring came along, they opened these sheds, took out the soil and spread the soil on the snow where the road was. The black soil brought on the melting process because the black colour absorbs the heat from the sunlight. It’s just like wearing black clothes on a hot summer day, it feels a lot hotter then it actually is. Nowadays they use big ploughs to clear the road.
