How to Keep Warm When Heating Fails You

We rely so much on heating, but when it fails us we are lost. Here are some cost effective, and not so cost effective solutions to raise the temperature of your house.

Here is my most way out there solution, and it’s a bizarre one I now and not always practical. When I lived in a more rural location I took mirrors out of the house and placed them in locations that beamed more light (if there is light) into rooms. The best time to do this is during snow, I placed a large mirror facing into the living room, granted I had to adjust it several times during the day, but if I hadn’t the living room would have seen no sun, this is ideal for houses that have rooms that never really see the sun.

The most important thing is don’t sit around in summer clothes complaining its cold, you will have to wrap up a bit, and drink warm drinks so you radiate heat from within.

If you’re a full house try to encourage togetherness, if you have people scattered across the house encourage together time, the body generates a lot of heat.

Keep active, housework and general tidying keeps you warm. Things like laundry especially when moving from room to room helps to generate personal heat.

Now on to my best piece of advice, if you’re heating is down its possible that you don’t have hot water too. Don’t use kettles to heat water use pans this way granted water takes longer to heat but it radiates heat in the kitchen area from hobs. The kitchen is often the coldest area of the house so take an opportunity to heat it.  If you are lucky to have an electric shower think twice about how you use it. If you have an electric shower over a bath place it in a bath and fill the bath with the showerhead. It will take a long time but again it serves two tasks in one. When you get out of a shower you get cold quicker because the water has just ran across you, when you get in a bath the heat is more contained, you seldom get out of a bath and are cold, but you do with a shower. The second plus point is the heat from the shower will warm both the bathroom and areas outside (although things might get a bit steamy).

As I said not all of these are cost effective, and some of them are fairly obvious. But hopefully if you find yourself without heating you may have picked up one tip that helps you get through.

Useful tips. Here in Cyprus heating our villa is a challenge. The house is geared up to keep cool in the hot sun, but the few weeks of winter make it like a fridge. We have minimum heating, use the sun and thermal clothing to get us through. Our family from the UK laugh, as it is hot Spring to them.

You have some good ideas. We always open the oven door after cooking too as that gives off a lot of heat.
