How to Know When Ice is Safe
A few safety tips.
You never know when ice is safe, do you? Well I’ll tell you how to tell when ice is safe. There are many ways to help you with this. Such as looking at the colour, taking a small step towards it and then quickly take a step backwards, temperature, and local conditions. However, no game on frozen water is ever a risk.
First of all, you must know that there is never such thing as “safe ice”. When you look at ice from a distance, it will seem as if it is safe to walk by or play games on, but it is not. No ice is safe. Also you must always look for ice safety songs saying “Danger! Thin Ice”.
Second of all, you should create a safety plan just in case something does go wrong. For starters you should be appropriately dressed and make sure that you are at suitable temperature for yourself. If you are testing something, such as a sport, you should carry an ice pick so if you do happen to be in danger, you could use the ice pick to grab hold of something and get yourself to safety.
Another handy thing would be having spare clothing just in case your original clothing gets wet. Carrying it in a handbag would be another great idea. You should also pack things for yourself “for the future” just in case anything happens to you. Don’t just assume that if the edge is thick, that the center will be thick.
You should always look at the following factors: Appearance of the ice, Snow coverage, Size of water body, Chemical composition of water, Extent of ice, and lastly Local climate fluctuations. Using all those factors will help you remain safe throughout your outdoor time. You should also make sure that the ice is checked at a regular basis by staff or someone with knowledge and experience. You should also ask some “locals”. If you are from town or another place you should first go to them and ask if it would be safe to go play some sport or go hiking. You should carefully observe the ice. Look for any cracks or splits. But be careful! You should not just count on your eyesight to know if it is safe or not to go hiking or to play a sport on ice.
