How to Make a Book Into a Hiding Spot
Here are ideas and directions on how to hollow out a book, and turn it into your own secret hiding spot!
To start off, I’ll show you what the one I made looks like!

What you’ll need:
- A book (hardcover works best)
- A safety knife
Turning a book into a hiding spot is a simple idea and has been around for generations. But a few tips can help to make it easier to do! So, here we go!
- Pick a book that you want to hollow out! Hardcover works best! And the bigger and thicker the book is, the more you can hide in it! Looking for one at a yardsale or fleamarket is the cheapest way to get one. But make sure not to use an antique book. Not only do they fall apart easier, but they can be worth money. My friend found this out the hard way when she hollowed out a book that was worth over $50. But now that it has a big hole on the middle of it, it’s worthless.
- Start hollowing the book out buy cutting throught it a few pages at a time. It’s time consuming, but you have less chance of tearing or cutting through the outside edge of the pages. Be sure to leave at least a good inch the whole way around the hole or it will give the pages a very flimsy appearance that will give away the fact that the book is hollow. And be careful to keep your fingers back from the blade to avoid cutting yourself.
- Make sure to leave a few pages uncut at the front and back of the book! This will give it a more normal appearance! And it would be a good idea to choose a book that doesn’t look too interesting to other people. You wouldn’t want someone to pick it up and start looking at it, or else your hollow book is no longer a secret.
And there you have it! You now have a hiding spot for your prized posessions and you made it yourself!
Note: Children should not attempt this without adult supervision.
