How to Make a Campfire

How to create, start, and extinguish a campfire.

  1. Start with a fire pit that will safely contain a fire without posing a threat to its surroundings.

  2. Pile up kindling in the middle. Kindling is composed of thin sticks and twigs that will burn quickly to start the rest of the wood. Kindling should be no thicker than your pinky finger. You should have a pile roughly the size of a bowling ball before continuing to the next step.

  3. After you have enough kindling, search for sticks around the size of your thumb or bigger and throw them up against the kindling. Not much of this size stick is needed so you should be fine with around 15 of them.

  4. Finally, lean 2-3 logs up against the final structure of sticks and use a lighter or matches to ignite the kindling. Logs should be the size of your wrist or bigger. You can squirt about a cup of charcoal lighter on the kindling two minutes before you light it to ensure it starts. The kindling should catch fire and begin to flame up on to the logs and sticks creating a fire. You will need to add logs to the fire if you want it to continually burn.

  5. When you are done with the fire, use water, sand, or dirt to cover and extinguish the embers and flame.

Caution: When the fire is no longer needed, be sure to completely extinguish the flames and embers.
