How to Make the Other Person Feel Important

Making the other person feel important is a daunting task. One often does not know where to begin. This article gives an idea of where one can start in making the other feel important.

Human beings value greatly self dignity and self worth. They like to be treated, to be convinced and to be assured that they are worth living. In so doing, each person then gives themselves meaning and purpose for being alive and roaming in the universe. Friendship relationships and love relationship pays great attention to this fact.

There is no universal rule of the thumb that people feel important if treated in a given way. Thus, it depends on each person to figure out how best he/she can make the other person feel that he/she is important. Following basic steps below however, would greatly assist anyone trying to make the other feel important:

  • Try to understand their values: Values give justification as to why one would make a certain decision, do certain acts or believe in a certain thing. When you understand such values, show appreciation. Blanket disapproval of what the other people values undermines their ego and makes them feel hated.
  • Give the other person an opportunity: Disapproval makes you not consider any contribution made by the person you disapprove. If such a person is your closest friend, he/she tends to shy away from self expression. Giving people opportunity to be themselves helps in improving their self assessment and regard you as their valued friend. They adopt this view based on the fact that you consider them to be important.
  • Be a participant in their lives, don’t be a fence sitter: People need others at one time in life. These are especially times of difficulties and great challenges. If you consider that person to be important and you would want them to know that, don’t sit back at such moments. Help where possible, search for resources where needed and try to help such a person overcome such moments. In so doing, the burden become easy to the person in need and thus appreciates you. A person will appreciate you if such a person thinks you are important.
  • Make a difference: As human beings, we are surrounded by crowds of people. However, only the people who consider you important will do more than the crowd. In other words, a person who thinks you are special will treat you better than the rest. Life provides opportunities for you to express how you feel about the other person, be on the lookout and determine when it’s appropriate to make that difference.

A major consideration in making the other person feel special is asking, “how would I want to be treated as important?” This enables you to work from the reverse side. But since not all people will think or act as we do, it is important to consider the above tips for they help you understand the person you want to make him/her feel special. It may not be expensive to make the other feel special; often it takes just time to listen and to see what the other person values. Enabling them to achieve their valued goals and aspirations gives them confidence that you treat them as special
