How to Stick to Your New Year’s Resolution

Like many people I am very excited about what the New Year will bring. I plan to make the necessary adjustments to make my life better as I go into the New Year.

Very confident I will lose weight by getting a membership at my local gym.  Optimistic in the fact my business will blossom this year making all of my sacrifices and late nights worth wild.  Energetic about making a relationship work which will possibly lead to marriage.  The only problem is this was last years’ resolution and it is about to be a new year.  Where did all the time go?

Does this sound a lot like you?  It seems every year we promise to keep New Year’s resolutions but they become out of style like white shoes in the winter by the 15th of January.  Did we forget what we promised ourselves we would do this year or were we coerced by the liquor and the moment to say “I do” to something we knew inside we were incapable of going through with?  Stop leaving your New Years’ Resolutions at the alter and learn how to keep your promises to yourself today.

1.  Don’t lie to yourself! It is okay to tell a lie every now and then but it gets creepy when you start to lie to yourself.  Its like telling yourself the dress must have shrunk when you know deep down inside you have gotten fatter from the late night escapades with Ben and Jerry.  You know you better than anyone else.  You were the only person there for all of your success and failures.

2.  Make reasonable and more obtainable goals!  To say you are going to become the next American Idol and you know you can’t sing is unrealistic.  Everyone sounds good in the shower so unless you can do your audition with water being poured on you I suggest you stick with what comes natural.

3.  Post your resolution somewhere you can see it every day.  I would suggest by your bed, in your office, or on the refrigerator.  If you always keep your resolution before you, it will better the chances of you actually taking it seriously.

4.  Get an accountable partner to hold you to your commitment to yourself.  Sometimes we can neglect a promise we made to ourselves even if we see it on a daily basis.  But we cannot ignore the friend who will nag you until you do what you said you were going to do

Following these steps doesn’t mean you will stick to your New Year’s resolution.  They just increase your chances of having a successful year.  Ultimately we all are responsible for our success and failure.  It is up to you to make it a success.  Have a Happy New Year and I hope it brings you closer to your dreams!
