I Cannot Believe They Did That to Me

Have you ever felt overwhelmed and helpless?

“I cannot believe they did that to me!” Jacqui yelled at the top of her voice.

She had been lumbered with making a presentation to all the department heads and regional managers.

“I’ve never done anything like this before, and there’s no way out. Help!”

How would you rate Jacqui’s self confidence, where 1 is totally confident and 10 is whoa, no confidence at all?

A full 10. No surprises there.

Let me give you a quick, yet powerful technique Jacqui could use to elevate her self confidence:

She is to divide an A4 paper into two columns. In the left column, she would jot down why she feels unconfident about the event. And in the right column, to write down the first thought that comes to her mind as to how she would like to feel for each reason she felt uneasy.

Once done, as far in advance of the presentation as possible, she is to pick one obstacle with its counter feeling, find a quiet place where she will not be disturbed for approximately five minutes and imagine how she would like to act and feel when making the presentation.

She is to imagine herself feeling calm and confident.

Jacqui is to work down her entire list. Imagine herself being self confident, standing tall, making plenty of eye contact. As the presentation gets closer, she will feel herself gradually becoming more confident.

On the day of the presentation she will fly through it with complete courage, poise and self confidence.

Allow me to throw this bit in: It is important to remember that repetition is the mother of all skill. When you use your imagination to tackle any area where you feel you lack self confidence, use this method as often as possible, preferably three times daily, until you achieve the results you are after.

A powerful tip: When you imagine yourself performing with self confidence, imagine there is a movie screen six feet in front of you. That’s where you see yourself performing impeccably. When your screen is six feet away and your imaginary movie is in full colour, the end result becomes multiplied.
