I Know I’m Weird
Who hasn’t said it? Who hasn’t heard it?
Not that the line doesn’t always apply. But when I hear “Yeah I know, I’m weird,” half the time it’s used to excuse something that isn’t weird at all. What is weird? Is it really just strangeness? Perhaps its like insanity…and those who question their own sanity (or in this case weirdness), chances are they aren’t very uncommon at all.
Unfortunately we all want to be special…so telling someone “no, you’re not weird” can actually insult them. I rarely hear “I’m just like everyone else”. Now, maybe it’s just me, but I don’t think its a full dose of either case. We’re all neither exactly the same or entirely unique at all. We copy things as we grow up… We borrow ideas too. And it doesn’t stop when you’re at the age of adulthood either.
Another thing about the odd and bizarre of the world, and something most people like to label themselves for something rare and unique, is growing to be a more popular subject every day. For instance: Geeks. We think of the kid with glasses, the girl without a fashion sense, or the guy who just showed up to fix the computer. However, this is obviously a generation for Geeks. There is the Geek Squad, computers (heck there is practically a whole other existence on-line!) and the look of glasses and know-it-all-quirky is very easily becoming a popular fashion and attitude.
Even the things twenty years ago are becoming the In Thing now… Paranormal investigators are sprouting up quicker than daisies on a Spring morning and tales of the supernatural and the unexplained are becoming comfortably common place. Personally I’m finding it harder and harder to find a reason to be scared of the things that go bump in the night because its just everywhere! No, but seriously, people are opening up. Of course this could be greatly blamed on a late night radio show called Coast to Coast AM (which I find absolutely brilliant on several levels) and the numerous television shows and homemade videos of the things I remember were only ever found on documentaries many years back. Geeks brought us the technology to advance, and now the “uncool” have risen to what I’d like to think is the top.
Maybe with everything so accessable, and with the indirect contact through the internet, people have an easier way of lowering their masks. They find they aren’t alone in their thoughts, their interests or issues.
When someone says “Yeah, I know I’m weird.” Just nod and smile and say, “Yep. Who isn’t?” and yet…it’s comforting to know you’re not the only one.
