Learning How to Make Decisions

by Redburn in Advice, October 16, 2009

Computer simulators or real life situations, which ones will reward you the most? Real life situations.

A computer game is a very bad source of training simply because of the amount of decisions you can make. honestly, the best computer game gives you only a couple of billions of possibilities and most of them can be dragged down to millions with some business knowledge. What happens when you play a business computer game? Even though AI is very smart, much smarter than in the past, it’s still very limited in the amount of decisions it can make, and you too because of the program itself.

Well, in real life you have a number of decision so big that it would take enough space to write the zeros that it would take to travel to the moon. Computer simulators are good to train a very specific problem, not a general one. If you need to train reaction time, a computer game is the best way to become an ace, on the other hand if you want to become a good doctor, Theme Hospital is no simulator for you.

Will computers ever be as good as real life for training? Yes but not in our life time. Computer power doubles every year and the amount of application and content seems to improve 1000x every year, for example in 2004 you almost had no good online applications much less a decent web 2.0 platform.

So what can you do for now? Just hit the streets and learn hit try and fail.
