If you think you do not have negotiation skills, that means you do not pay attention to conversations around you.
It is not possible to attend contract negotiation training if your job does not require it. However, that does not mean you cannot learn negotiation skills.
You can pick up negotiation skills from your daily life.
What are the negotiation skills you can learn every day?
1. Asking questions
You need to learn how to ask questions. There are some people who are so good at asking questions. They do not even have to do much talking.
Asking questions is one of the most important negotiation skills. If you do not even know the intention or the perspective of the other party, you cannot negotiate successfully.
2. Listening skill
You need to learn to listen attentively. You need to hear what the other party is saying, not what you think they are saying.
That is why it is important to listen carefully without imputing motives.
Never interrupt when the other party is developing his point. Ask questions to clarify only when the other party has finished talking.
3. Research
You need factual information to back up your request. If you are negotiating salary for the new job offer, you need to have information about the company, and the current market rate for your job.
Information and knowledge are key advantages that you can possess. That is why the ability to research and gain information is an important negotiation skill.
4. Culture
Negotiation skills include understanding the culture.
That is especially so when you are negotiating with a few parties. Some people do not talk business in the first or second meeting. They like to understand you and get to know you better before they are comfortable to negotiate with you.
Some people are rather direct. They like to settle everything within a few days.
Negotiation skills are important to everyone. You need to negotiate when you apply for job. You need to negotiate in business contract. You need negotiation skills when you are serving others or requesting for services.
It is important to pick up negotiation skills from people around you. When you overheard a conversation, you can listen attentively to see how negotiation skills are applied.
