Lessons in Forgiveness

Forgiveness is the act of writing off an emotional debt of opening our heart and engaging in a conscious and deliberate release of resentment. Looking at past experiences as errors implies guilt and blame which make it impossible to learn anything meaningful from them.

Four kinds of Forgiveness

1.    Forgiveness for yourself. You must be compassionate to yourself for doing the best under the circumstances and resources you had at that time. Make amends, and then release the situation.

2.    Forgiveness of others. This is when you forgive someone for moderate transgression. You must identify with the person’s motivation so you can realize why the person did what he did. Show compassion and release it.

3.     Advanced Forgiveness of yourself. This is meant for serious transgressions, like when you did something that violates your own values and ethics. Seek to understand why you did it, make amends and find it in your heart to absolve it.

4.    Forgiveness for others. Each of us has been wronged or hurt by others at sometime in our life to such extent that forgiveness seems impossible. But harboring resentment and revenge can only keep us trapped in victimhood. Forgiveness is the only thing that can undo wrongdoing and clean our slate. Feel fully the hurt of anger so that we can release it. Then view it as a necessary part of our spiritual evolution.

Forgiving may be at times possible, but forgetting is even more difficult.
