Liar, Liar
How to spot a liar in fifteen easy steps.
Everybody gets lied to. Sometimes you might get a feeling that someone is being economical with the truth. To really be sure though, just check out their body language. Unless they are a really good liar, you should easily be able to catch them out.
Movement
Liars tend to use smaller movements and take up less space, probably so as not to draw attention to themselves.
Face touch
This is human instinct. Have you ever noticed how a small child covers their mouth after telling a lie? Touching of the mouth, nose or any other part of the face can be a sign that the person isn’t being honest.
Eye movement
Avoiding your gaze is also a good indicator, although some more seasoned liars hold eye contact for prolonged periods of time as they know this rule.
Expressions
Facial expressions are limited to the mouth, as any emotions displayed are probably false.
Stance
They will probably be awkward in their general demeanor and will typically avoid standing head on as this is more confrontational.
Palms
They will hide their hands in their pockets, behind their backs, anywhere except from in full view from you. This again is instinct.
Objects
If the liar is at all nervous about their lie, they will tend to fiddle with something, whether it is a ring, thir hair or their mobile. Also watch out for them moving an object and placing it between the two of you such as a glass on a table.
Tone
Keep a look out for a tone which is inconsistent with their gestures.
Sarcasm
A comment like ‘Oh yes, of course I did it!’ with a sarcastic tone, is often used to throw you off track and can even make you feel stupid for questioning them.
Using your question in their answer
Rewording your question to form part of their answer. A good example is when former President Bill Clinton was asked ‘Did you have sexual relations with this woman?’ to which he replied ‘I did not have sexual relations with this woman’.
Giving too many details
They will give an elaborate story which shows a lot of thought has gone into their cover story.
Avoiding giving a direct answer
They will imply, not deny. This is quite a clever tactic as there is no comeback since they have not technically lied.
Defensive
They are overly defensive. As soon as you broach the subject they jump in with their side.
Change subject
Quickly changing the subject avoids the need for lying and is effective takes your mind off the original question.
