Life Lessons From the Marines: The Main Effort
Marines keep their focus on what they need to kill or destroy. You should too.
Here’s another important concept that probably needs to be explained to you. We Marines have something called the Main Effort (We used to call it the Focus of Main Effort until somebody pointed out the redundancy of that phrase. Even Marines can admit mistakes).
Because fighting and winning wars often comes down to decisive actions at a particular time and place, we need to know who is the focus of our unit’s combat power at each phase of the battle. Whoever that unit is, they get the priority of movement and fire. Everyone else needs to assist that unit to accomplish their part of the overall mission. If not, it all falls apart.
In your life there will be enemies seeking your destruction. We’ve talked before about how you need to eliminate them; kill or be killed, so to speak. The Main Effort correlates to you keeping your focus and not wandering around looking for other things to do when there’s an enemy to kill.
If you need to be running in order to defeat your enemy then don’t spend your time working on your tennis game. If you need to be training a new employee then don’t read Joyce (I actually don’t advise reading Joyce under any circumstances but that’s not relevant right now). When you make the decision to defeat an enemy, do it and keep your focus on whatever best helps you defeat it.
You’d think this would be self evident. Unfortunately I can assure you from personal observation, there are plenty of people who can’t seem to keep things together long enough to fight their way out of a wet paper bag. Sad.
Keep your combat power where it does you the most good.
