Life Lessons From the Marines: Violence and Danger

Now we start to get down to brass tacks. What sort of world do we live in? What can you do to put all this together and straighten out your life?

Next we’re going to talk about the aspect of life that can have the most unpleasant effects on the human will. Remember that life is a clash between two (and unfortunately sometimes several) irreconcilable wills. In that clash there is much to be feared. MCDP 1 states, “violence is an essential element of war, and its immediate result is bloodshed, destruction, and suffering.” Add to that the joys of pain and privation and you have a potent cocktail just perfect for scaring the pants off someone. This discussion gets us back to the core values that Marines live by and helps explain why they exist. Fear is ever present in war and courage is needed to overcome it.

Here’s something that should help in your life. Every study I’ve seen or heard about that tries to explain why soldiers display acts of heroism on the battlefield points to ‘not wanting to let their buddies down.’ After all the training and practice and motivation from God and country, what it really boils down to in combat is the camaraderie between individuals within a given unit. Men under fire act brave because there are other men on their left and right who are counting on them to do their jobs. Honor, Courage, and Commitment. Quite simply, this is the mystique that binds a fighting force together and makes it effective.

So how does that apply to your life? You have people that count on you as well. Do you really want to let them down? Of course not. So you stand up in the face of adversity and strive to succeed. Fired? Turned down for a loan? Chose the wrong color of hair dye? Don’t let setbacks get you down; as we’ve explained before, they’re just additional chances to excel.

You say you don’t have anyone who counts on you? Well then go find someone before you wither away and die. That way, in the never ending clash of wills that is called ‘life’ you have a reason to project your will and achieve victory.
