N.E.T. Syndrome: Not Enough Time
A source of stress and a feeling of being on overload is often caused by committing to more obligations than time allows. There is a way to avoid this.
When I was experiencing a period of time where I felt stretched beyond my limit every day, I made a self-diagnosis of what I termed N.E.T. syndrome. I carefully analyzed its symptoms, causes, cure and a way to prevent it from reoccurring.
Symptoms:
- A constant feeling of mental and physical overload.
- The inability to focus on one task without looking toward the next one.
- Total exhaustion at the end of each day.
Cause:
Trying too assume too much responsibility at work, at home, and in social situations.
Effects:
- Doing too many things and not performing each task well.
- Losing patience quickly with family, friends, co-workers, and myself.
- No time to rest or relax.
Cure:
- Learning what not to do and acquiring the skill of saying, “No”.
- Regaining control of my time.
I am now more selective about the demands an obligations I allow myself to be committed to. I have stopped trying to do more things than I can comfortably handle.
I realize how important it is to reserve a portion of each day for myself. By adopting this mode of thinking I feel I can perform the tasks I commit to more successfully. I am more patient with those around me and with myself.
I pursue avenues that allow a personal time for relaxing such a writing in a journal, reading, taking walks, listening to soothing music, and meditating. By following this plan I believe I can prevent a reoccurrence of N.E.T. syndrome.
