Noise
I’ve become both accustomed and disgusted with the noise, the sounds of New York City. The city that never sleeps, that is never silent. This place where one is never left alone to their thoughts.
Our thoughts have to be steroids in order to be heard and processed clearly. What happened to silence and the appreciation of silence? Why and when did we become so comfortable with this never ending noise that surrounds us? From construction noises, transit noises, conversational noises, yes I called conversations “noise” because if your conversation was that important one would want to be in a “silent” surrounding to thoroughly hear and be engaged in such an interaction, we’ve lost that which allows us to connect with ourselves. Yes, times are changing and we are in a difficult slump right now as a nation but that is exactly the reason why the noise is harmful. People always tend to associate noise with busyness and if one is busy then they must be making progress and if you are progressing then that means you are succeeding. I say no. Staying busy is not always a good thing, especially when you’ve lost sight of your initial purpose or goal while you were so caught up in the noise. People tend to want to use the noise as motivation- they want to use the busyness as a source of inspiration to step their game up per say, that’s not needed. Motivation comes from the individual, not the environment. If one wants to succeed they need not listen to anything or anyone else but themselves.
However, how can one hear their own thoughts in a place where silence is not allowed nor desired, where it represents nothingness and standstill-no forward progress. Silence is golden, just like the saying states. It really is golden, it allows for us to gather ourselves and collect our thoughts so that we can paint a clear picture of what it is we want, we need and what we strive for. People forgot that silence is our friend. Think about it, how many times have you answered your own question when you’ve posed it to a friend who remained silent? Plenty- don’t lie. I really can’t understand why people purposefully place themselves in the noise and choose to be around it. I know the reasons and I appreciate them but I can’t really condone them. Noise is a distraction yet people tend to identify it as a focal point. For example, the loudest person in the room gets all the attention, for what? Meanwhile the loudest person is probably the one who knows the least or is the least relevant to the situation. Everyone in my opinion needs to take some time out to reflect in silence and put everything in perspective and prioritize their lives because in all this noise that surrounds and embodies us we are losing that which compels us most, our minds.

Wow, I could not agree more. Great Article. I really like the power behind this. I know whenever I need to relax i prefer to take a drive and just be encased in a noiseless atmosphere, and I do my best work alone, and in silence. Well done my friend.
