One Simple Thing You Can Do to Live a Longer Life

Ancient wisdom had it right all along.

In my younger days I would often wonder why God would ask us to spend one day out of the week practically doing nothing.  As a became older, I started to think that God had it right all along. Having one day out of the week set aside for a sabbath or rest day, isn’t just an act of piousness, but good sense!

Face it, we do a lot to earn a living every day, then throw in kids, pets, and a million and one other concerns and you can see how setting one day aside to rest actually becomes a necessity. We undoubtedly recharge our cell phones, lap-tops and for some of us our cars, but in the process we forget to recharge the most important thing of all: our bodies and minds.

It is not only God telling us to slow down for one day, but also hard cold science. You definitely don’t need a PhD to figure out that having a sabbath each week is actually good for your health.  If anything, having a set sabbath allows you to connect better with family while at the same time giving your body a bit of rest from the world.  The end result will be that you will lead a richer more healthier life.

Consider a candle that burns constantly, then a candle which is extinguished when light is no longer needed.  Which one do you think will last longer?

All religious scripts contain some very good advice for life: exactly as one would expect, and taking a day out each week has to be top advice. On the other hand, though, it may be interesting to reflect that inhabitants of westernised countries are living longer at the same time that we are experiencing the 24/7 global culture. A conundrum akin to being told that we must stop smoking, drink less, stop speeding, and loose weight to extend our lives further; but also that the world is over-populated and there are insufficient funds in the pension pot to look after the aged.
