Think outside the box

Grapes like Pinot Grigio and Chardonnay have become so popular that their price has doubled over the last few years.  Try ordering Garganesga – very similar to Pinot Grigio, only cheaper.

Have a taste test

If you are out with friends, each order a different wine and try out each others, this way you will be able to work out which is your favourite.

Choose wine from unfamiliar areas

By opting for the typical Chianti or Rioja,  you will be paying a lot for a good bottle of wine.  By choosing a less known region, such as Rioja’s neighboring Navarra, you can get just as good a bottle of wine, for a lot less.

Don’t always choose house wine

Unless you are an expert, it can be tricky to navigate your way around a wine list,  but remember most house wines are simple and lack character.  Try the third or fourth wine on the list, for something a bit better value for money.
