Paruresis Cure for The Pee Shy Guy
Fear of public urination? You could be a pee shy guy better known as a avoidant paruresis!
So what is pee shyness, shy bladder, shy kidney, bashful bladder,or paruresis as it’s known amongst some medical circles. I say some because Paruresis is not widely known even amongst the medical profession! Paruresis is where the sufferer finds it difficult or has the inability to urinate in front of others or sometimes even in their own homes. It’s like a social toilet phobia and it can wreck lives!
Shy bladder syndrome can lead to lots of problems for the sufferer. For example someone who has shy bladder who then finds it difficult to urinate in certain situations has to plan their lives around when they can get to a safe toilet. A safe toilet for an avoidant paruresis sufferer might be somewhere that they feel at ease with. The toilet might not be very busy thus enabling them to relax and urinate with ease.
So is there a paruresis cure?
There are no real quick fixes to this. However one method a lot of sufferers have found to be a help is what is known as desensitization therapy or gradual exposure therapy. Basically all this does is expose the paruresis sufferer to the situation that they are afraid of and eventually the fear disappears and they can successfully urinate in public places again.
How does this work?
Part 1
1. Pick a public toilet that’s not too busy.
2. About an hour before you go in drink 1 liter of water
3. Make sure you wait until you really feel the urge to urinate
4. Go into the toilet and head for a cubicle
5. Do not lock the door, now urinate.
6. Keep practicing this. Next time open the door a quarter of the way.
7. Keep going until you can urinate with the door fully open. This will require a lot of practice.
Part 2
8. Follow the same steps drink about a liter of water and wait until you feel the urge.
9.Now go to a stall and try.
10. Keep trying until you can. Sometimes it helps to find a quite toilet. Once you succeed there move on to busier toilets.
Faking it
Faking it is where the paruresis sufferer goes to a stall and pretends to pee. This is done at many public toilets in order to get the shy bladder sufferer used to public urination. What eventually happens is that the person gets so bored of being afraid they’ll normally be able to urinate after a long period of time.
