Public Speaking

Your feet should be slightly apart, one a little in front of the other. Your hands should be placed comfortably by your side. Don’t clench your fists tight, be calm and relaxed.

`public specking’ means speaking to the public (a group of people) or in public (in front of a gathering). Elocution is the first step towards becoming a good public speaker. In elocution, you have to recite a memorized speech.

To be a good elocutionist, you must remember to do the following things.

a)      Choose a poem, a speech or a short story, which suits ou.

b)      Read the piece slowly a few times to understand it completely.

c)      Memorize the piece.

d)      Underline the words and sentences you need to stress on.

e)      Practice in front of the mirror, putting special emphasis on facial expressions.

f)        Make sure each word is audible and can be understood by the audience.

g)      Modulate your voice –sometimes you will need to speak loudly and sometimes you will need to be soft.

h)      Speak to the audience and not to the ceiling or the walls.

You must not do these things!

1)      Use your hands too much –it could be distracting.

2)      Walk around –it is not permitted.

3)      Walk around –it is not permitted.

4)      Stand with your hands in your pockets or with a slouch.

Some helpful tips

a)      shut your eyes for a few seconds and breathe in and out deeply

b)      relax your shoulder and don’t be stiff

c)      Walk confidently onto the stage, take your position, pause a while and then begin.
