Say Goodbye to Those Boring Weekends: Ideas for Weekend Activities

Are you the kind of person with itchy feet that always need to go on a mission?

If you would like to beat the weekend boredom blues and have some good stories to tell others then try some of these handy tips.

1. Find a Hobby

Always wanted to try something new? Ceroc dancing? A cooking class? Perhaps a sport? Well now is the time to take the plunge and try the activity that seems to conjur up fantasies in your mind! Check out the column of events and clubs in your local newspapers or search the Yellow Pages and the Internet. Furthermore, trying a new hobby can be as simple as just borrowing a few “how to” books from the library or searching up “how to” articles on the Internet and trying the activity at home yourself. And if you get really good, you may be able to make a bit of extra cash out of your hobby!

2. Explore the Neighbourhood

You can be amazed by just how little you actually know about the city or town you live in – even the suburb! Go solo, with your other half, a friend or even with the dog and just simply lose yourself. You never know what you may find – secret shops with amazing treasures, parks, riverside walks, public gardens. Get out there – the world is there for you to explore! Plus it makes for good exercise.

3. Bury Yourself in a Book

Search around in secondhand bookstores and at bookfairs and craft markets for some good reads. With online shopping, buying all sorts of books for very good prices is another option as well. The local library is also an excellent place. Get started with classics by the likes of Alfred Hitchcock, Jane Austen, the Bronte sisters, Stephen King, Ernest Hemingway (if you want to sound very deep and intelligent at the next dinner party) or try your hand at a whole range of genres that will get your imagination bursting – romance, contemporary, chicklit, horror, Western, historical fiction, non fiction, biography, poetry. Reading is a great activity to do no matter the weather as well. Snuggle up under a blanket by the fireplace in winter, in a chair next to a raindrop covered window or outside on the deck with a large class of lemonade at the end of a summer’s day.

4. Make Time for Loved Ones

Keep the relationship with your other-half well and truly alive with regular dates – dinner dates, breakfasts, lunches movies, ten pin bowling, picnics… Weekends are also a good time to catch up with friends, especially those you have not seen in a while. They are also a good time to half big family dinners where everyone can pitch in with the cooking and discuss how everyone’s week has gone or debate over topical issues such as politics. Then after dinner and dessert, dust off that old Scrabble or Monopoly board or head outside for a good game of football or spotlight.

5. Weekend Getaways

If you’ve got the whole weekend to spare and the money, get in a car or a plane or even a train and go for a roadtrip! There are plenty of places to visit – lakes, National Parks, mountains, beaches, cities, little country towns. Rough it out with a tent or caravan, try out “glamping” (or glamorous camping – camping with all the luxuries of a 5 star hotel) or stay in a motel, backpackers, family, friends…

6. And if you are a Student or Young With Not Much Money…

How about: a part-time job (make money, good for your CV/resume, gain a new experience and skills); slumber parties; volunteering; working on a project you’ve always wanted to try like a business venture or science experiment; extra study (it will pay off in the long run!); arts and crafts such as painting, papier mache…

And there you have it. Instead of complaining about how boring your weekends are and how unfulfilling life seems outside your work or school schedules, you can now keep yourself occupied with plenty of invigorating, stimulating and fun-filled activities. Enjoy!
