Self-Discipline

A guide on how to improve your self-discipline.

We all know it. We’re supposed to do something, but we don’t want to. We’ll do it later, and watch television now! That’s something I often meet in my everyday. But I’ve learned to overcome it.

Self-discipline is a harsh thing to accomplish. The problem is your unconscious. If you watch television, when you should really work, you are likely to say to yourself: “I should be working now”. Your unconscious listens exactly to what you tell it. So if you say, I should be working, your unconscious gathers the following information:

“I’m watching television”

What you really should be saying to yourself is something like “I am working now!”. Your unconscious will then say: “Whoops! I’m not working, but I should! Let’s get going!”. You now feel more drawn to working than watching television.

This technique is good, to tell yourself exactly what you should be doing at this moment. But it’s far from perfect.

If you really want to have control over yourself, you should be practising something mentally-strengthening. Especially Tai Chi or Qhi Qong is good, and besides from strengthening your mental side, it makes you healthy and strong.

Another important fact is your willpower. If you’re generally lazy, then you’re likely to not do your work. On the other hand, if you have are comitted to what you do, you will likely work. Thats the keyword: commitment.

If you constantly hate working, then maybe it’s time you do something else?

One last thing: If you really want to do something, all these techniques is unneeded. Then your willpower will take over.
