Set Goals to Make Dreams Come True
Dreaming is interesting as you can think of whatever you like to be, do and have in your own life. It is also necessary if you want to make them come true. You may have a long list of ambiguous wants but it is never enough. What is still in need is a plan with actions. Here are my techniques of dreaming, that enable me to make some of them come true while some of them are working in progress.
Dream more
The more you dream, the more pictures you can see what you would like to achieve. Dreaming is definitely a necessity. Sometimes, I need to picture my future with words, drawing or even the news cutting occasionally. This helps visualizes how your future you would like to have and also motivates you to do more to achieve them.
Think big and set specific goals
It’s time to think big. What do you want? You may answer me “I want to be happy.” “I want to be a billionaire”. Ok, it’s good at the beginning but please think in a more specific way. You may further ask yourself what makes you happy and excited and what you will do with billion dollars. For example, for career, I want to own a profitable business in dance wear. I want to be a professional yoga coach. For family, I want to be good mother with 3 children. I want to live with my family in a 2000 square feet house. For language learning, I want to be able to master English, Chinese, Japanese and French well. For lifestyle, I want to work from home at my own pace and travel around the world with mere 10 hours work per week. Think of what you dream of BEING, DOING, and HAVING.
Set your goals without the concern about others’ judgment. If you want to have 10,000 square feet house, put it down. If you want to have a Ferrari, put it down. This is all your personal choice in planning your own life.
Devise a life plan with timeline
Set the timelines to achieve your goals. You may have a 10-year plan, 5-year plan, 12-month plan or 6-month plan. Personally, I like to set up a 5-year plan as well as a 6-month plan which is more detailed with actions and steps. They should be consistent in a sense. For instance, my goal is to be a yoga coach which may take around 3 years to achieve. That is marked in my 5-year plan while I need to include some smaller goals to achieve that big goal, such as completing a yoga instructor course in this year.
Turn goals to defined actions
With the clear goals, turn them into defined actions you need to take to make your dreams come true. Make each goal actionable. Here are some examples:
1. Run a profitable business in dance wear
Actions to be taken in my 6-month plan: Do marketing research, devise a business plan, seek advice from successful entrepreneurs I know, etc.
2. Master languages of Chinese and English, Japanese and French well
Actions to be taken in my 6-month plan: Focus on Chinese and English in this year by writing daily in both languages, reading good articles every day for 30 minutes, etc.
Accomplish one or more steps every day no matter how small it is. With more steps achieved, the closer you are to the goals you set! It is really an exciting journey to make and see your dreams come true with your everyday effort. Take the first step now!
Thanks for reading and wish your dreams come true.
