Seven Reasons for NOT Riding with Your Pet in The Car Window
The common and possibly dangerous practice of driving with a pet perched in an open window of a moving vehicle.
How many of us have been cruising in traffic and looked over and saw a dog perched on the car or truck window of some driver’s car? You may even be guilty of this offense yourself. Well, here are seven reasons why this simply should not be practiced:
Number One
The dog (which is what I most commonly see) may fall out or worse take off running. This could pose a major vehicular collision and Fido might just end up being roadkill.
Number Two
It’s distracting to the driver. Now along with the cellphone tweeting, hair grooming, and stereo manipulating you have pet stroking to include. I wonder if having the dog in your lap or window while driving is some type of ’status symbol’ or a practice drill of multi- tasking while driving?
Number Three
IT’S AGAINST THE LAW
The law states that animals are to be transported in some type of pet transport or restraint within the vehicle in some way. You don’t see people riding with their pet horse hanging out the car window. Well, if they could some would. Of course, this law isn’t readily enforced and if it were there would be a protest to have the ‘right’ to endanger your beloved pet’s life by letting it hang out the window. Okay.
Number Four
It’s distracting to other drivers. Most people are pet owners (me included) and if they see a dog that’s quote, “Just so adorable”, unquote they may crash into someone during their admiration of the animal. Not so good.
Number Five
Your pet could be spooked. What if someone pulled up beside you with your dog hanging out enjoying the breeze and all of a sudden hit a blaring airhorn. That might scare the critter (and you as well) and you may both end up being wet. People can be mean.
Number Six
It’s not smart. Not only are you endangering your pet’s safety, you are most assuredly compromising other motorists’ and your traveling safety as well.
Number Seven
You geniunely love your pet. Just like people often call their animals their ‘kids’, neither do parents let their de facto children hang out the window while the car is moving. Same principle should apply to your four legged family members.

Wow! I love the presentation, the humor and ultimate truths of your article. This is really something. Fido might just end up being roadkill!!!–Along with cell phone tweeting, hair grooming, stereo manipulating, you have pet stroking to include!!! I could not have written a better article. This problem irks me. It is dangerous to have pets in the front seat. People don’t seem to have fear for their life or anybody else’s.You made a good point, we don’t let our kids and out the window, so if we truly love out pets why do we do it. Why?
I have a pet too. I love pets but I see folks display some very careless behavior with their pets. I often wonder how well do they care for their children. This article is informative and your advice should be followed.
