So You Want to Win a Pageant

15 Tips and Hints on how to win a pageant.

So you want to win a pageant. Maybe you want to do better in pageants or maybe your starting out for the first time. Either way follow these tips and you’ll be a pro in no time.

  1. Always find a dress that compliments your color. Don’t get a color that washes you out! If you do go get a spray tan.
  2. Never buy a dress on-line, unless you plan on having it altered once you get it. Remember altering dresses can take a while so you will want to do this well in advance.
  3. Never EVER buy the first dress you see. Try on different dresses. Go to different stores. Trust me your dress is out there.
  4. Always walk in your heels for one whole week before the pageant. Try balancing a book on your head. It helps you walk more gracefully plus it gives you better posture.
  5. Leave your skimpy dresses that show your stomach or has a high slit for PROM! Unless they are male judges MOST women will not want to see your legs or your stomach.
  6. If you do a spray tan make sure you do it a few weeks early and do follow-ups to keep the tan. I have seen girls get sprayed tan that day and show up looking orange to the pageant.
  7.  Wear your hair according to your dress. If your dress is a halter top wear your hair half-way up or all the way up. If your dress is strapless wear you hair down.
  8. Get your dress altered! Nothing looks better than a dress that is made to fit YOUR body style correctly. You don’t want something too tight in one place and baggy in another.
  9. Try not to do your own makeup. There are places out there that will do your makeup for free. Peebles is one good spot to go and get your makeup done for free. After you know what makeup compliments your face and dress you can start to do your own makeup. Don’t feel like you HAVE to have someone do your makeup all the time. I did my makeup plenty of times and even won Queen.
  10. Walk and stand like a model. Yes modeling school can pay off for pageants. Sometimes they are cheaper than getting a private coach and can work just as good. Walking like a model may take work. When you walk put one foot in front of the other and basically walk in a line. You look more graceful. If your in a bathing suit competition lift your leg up and bend the knee then put the foot in front of the other. This will take practice but if you do it right it will give you bounce and your own personality. Standing like a model is a little easier. Put most of your weight on your left foot. Lean back just a little, not too far. Put the heel of your right foot into the arch of your left foot and point away from the foot. Keep your right knee bent. If you are holding your number in your hand take the opposite hand put it behind your back and bend the elbow ever so slightly.
  11. Making turns on stage is easier, according to what dress you have. If your dress has a train step to you front then turn towards your left in a circle. You don’t have to turn your head towards the judges when you are showing them the back of your dress. Let them see your hair. If you do not have a train take one foot frontwards and pivot around. You can turn at each spot if you would like but don’t make it seem like you are over confident. Don’t speed walk either. The best way to walk is to go to the first mark and stop look at the judges and pose for just a few seconds. Head to the second mark (don’t look for the marks just guess) stop and pose for a few seconds and make a quick turn all the way around. Go to the middle (or third) mark. Stand and pose turn halfway around so the judges can see you hair and the back of your dress count to 5 slowly then turn back around and pose for the count of 3. Go to the fourth mark and pose, make a quick turn after posing and head back to the first mark. Turn back around before leaving the stage and pose one more time for the judges.
  12. If you don’t get anything but photogenic or place and your not happy don’t scowl. Don’t be angry. SMILE! You never know where the judges will be judging again. Afterwards don’t get mad until you leave. It shows bad sportsmanship to the other girls plus they will remember the fit you threw if they see you in another pageant.
  13. Sometime the week before a pageant put our heels and dress on and walk. You want to make sure you can walk in your dress. You don’t want to fall on stage do you?
  14. Think you might have added a few pounds or don’t want to suck in the entire time on stage? Try using saran wrap and wrap it tight around your stomach (unless you have a open back dress). You can always wear a girdle or use Spanks. Also try not to wear underwear. Even a thong shows under your dress and the bulge from a pantyline can cost you some points in some pageants.
  15. The last tip I have for you today is to be a winner you must BELIEVE you already are a winner. Before the pageant imagine yourself winning the crown. As you walk on stage think to yourself that you know you will win and the Judges love you. After walking on stage no matter if you messed up on something congratulate yourself for even getting up there. you have braved something other girls can’t, getting on stage.
