The ABCs of Self Defense: Commonsense Strategies
When it comes to staying safe, your mind is your most powerful weapon. Here’s what you need to know and do when danger lurks.

Walk with shoulders back, chin up, and a brisk, surefooted stride.
Plan your route so you always look as though you know where you’re going, whether walking or driving. Familiarize yourself with safe havens (firehouses, police precincts, all-night delis or gas stations) along the way, so that if you need help, you’ll know where you can find it.
Trust your instincts. If you get a bad feeling about a particular person or place-even if it makes no sense-listen to yourself. Cross to the other side of the street. Walk into a store.
Wear an all-business expression on your face and don’t engage in casual chit-chat with strangers. Criminals often stop their intended victim to ask for directions or the time of the day. If you look unapproachable, they may avoid you.
Practice safety-in-numbers. Criminals will rarely assault more than one person on the street or in car.
Don’t walk or drive in high-crime areas, even if it means going out of your way.
Don’t walk alone in dark, lonely streets. If by chance you find yourself in this situation, stay close to the curb when walking on a sidewalk. The light from street lamps is a deterrent and you can’t be pushed into a doorway or alley.
And finally, have your keys ready as you approach your car or home so you can enter quickly.

nice tips, but some people are just evil. so i still think it’s best to plan your day to avoid staying out late at all; if you can’t avoid it, pocket protective gadgets and have someone to accompany you, never stay out alone at night!

I like the “wear a business look idea”. I bet that would work. When i starte dreading the article, i expected the carry-a-spray-bottle or red-chilli-powder in te purse to be on the list! Old, but it works!!
