The Power of Influence

We all have the power to influence people and the world around us while at the same time people and the world also has a power of influence over us. Take a look at how your attitude, what you see and hear, peer pressure, and society can influence and be influenced in a way that makes us and it who we become.

Your environment exerts pressure, no matter how minor or major, upon you. Human society exerts a strong force of peer pressure upon all of us. Just the attitude of others can have an influence upon you because it is usually manifested outwardly in some way and causes the observer to react emotionally, mentally, verbally, or physically. Even the power of persuasion is used by advertisers around the world to make money. How your brain can understand and interpret characters on a computer screen is a wonder. As a matter of fact everything around has a power of influence upon you. The seat, room and building in which you may be is influencing you subconsciously. How? It may cause you to feel comfortable, warm or secure. Or you could be nervous, chilled and anxious. This influence is natural and inevitable. Our minds, bodies and hearts are inadvertently influenced by our surroundings. We are especially stimulated by what we see, first, and by what we hear, second. Actually without any conscious effort our brains take in information about our surroundings nonstop all of our lives. Every one of our senses gathers information and relays it to the brain automatically. This happens to every person alive. It does not matter how intelligent or mentally strong a person is. Whether you are aware of the influence or not has no bearing on the knowledge that your brain receives from the environment. Deliberate rational and mental ignorance still will not prevent this natural process. This is how we are made, it is a law of human physiology.

The power of influence is truly all around us as there is no escape. The abstract and physical force between both living and non living things is a constant. It has limited affect upon inorganic things when compared to organic things. Inorganic things and organic things without brains (like rocks) are merely influenced in physical ways. But for organic things that are comparatively intelligent, like man and animals, the affect is both abstract and physical. Even in the microscopic world environmental influence exists. Material things have a relatively low power of influence upon us but it becomes stronger depending upon the attitude of the person toward such things. A materialistic person may cherish material things to the point that they provide more comfort, security, and pleasure than people do. Peer pressure from those we know and advertisers may influence us to pursue material things even if such things are not needed. On the other hand just being around physical things can have a positive or negative influence around us as well. Sound is a powerful influence because when we hear sounds we respond emotionally in ways that are not premeditated. The sound of a beautiful melody, a babbling brook, rustling leaves can bring us much pleasure and calm us down. But sounds that may disturb us like a thunderstorm, loud heavy tempo music, or a tornado may cause us fear and anxiety. Usually an emotional response is followed by, after an mentally instantaneous response, a verbal and physical reaction. The entire experience is also recorded in the memory of your brain that plays a part in who you become and are becoming as a person. Something to think about is it not?
