Things to Think of Before You Relocate or Migrate

If you are planning to move to a new city, relocating to another country or even a state then it’s important that this decision impacts you as well as others. Check out those 12 things that you must consider before you decide to relocate.

There are several reasons why people consider moving to new cities or even countries. Better career opportunities, better quality of life, extended family and better weather are just some of them. While decisions are made on the whether the main objective is met or not, depending on what stage of career & life you are at, there are several other considerations to be accounted for.

1.    Lifestyle match

In whichever city we reside, we would have developed a lifestyle around it. If the theatre was close to where we lived, we became used to watching movies every weekend. Similarly, office was walking distance. Some other things like friends & relatives, proximity to market; availability of domestic help etc would have become a way of life. While relocating check if you are making major compromises on your lifestyle are how prepared you are for it. Chose your home in such a location in the city where you will enjoy, be occupied & feel good about the neighborhood. This goes a long way in settling faster in the new city.

2.    Kids

This is something we take for granted. But do note that unhappy kids can get you to relocate back to the city you migrated from. Check if the weather is pro your child’s health especially if the kid is allergic or has asthma etc. Make sure that you have checked if there is school where the child would not feel out of place, both in terms of quality of student & teachers and also on terms being accepted by the students. Have your child mix around with other colleagues kids so that they get familiar to the environment & prepare your child for the change. If need be visit the school counselor & keep the kid occupied with other activities. Let your children know about other exiting things like club house, sports and other entertainment spots. This will make them more comfortable & give a feeling that they would not have to hugely compromise on their lifestyle.

3.    Pre shift visit

Check with your new organization if they provide a pre- relocation visit. This visit helps your spouse and child familiarize with the place. Get your family to meet your prospective colleague’s family so that they may share apprehensions. This will help make a good decision. Entire family buy-in makes the shift smooth & fun. Check career options if your spouse is working/ keen on working. Check the residential complexes, power failure and other issues. Transportation & medical help should also be in your checklist.
