Three Tips to Help You Become More Spontaneous

A short humorous article on how you can learn to lighten up a little.

I am often criticized by my wife for being to spontaneous. In fact, my spontaneity drives my wife crazy.  Let me give you a prime example.  My wife has this calendar by the back door to our house where she writes down everything she needs to be doing on any given day. She is constantly telling me if it’s not written on the calendar then it’s not going to happen.

To which I reply “Uh huh,” then walk away smiling and muttering “By the way dear tomorrow is our anniversary, and since it is not on the calendar I guess you don’t need a present.”   My wife incidentally didn’t see the humor in that statement.  Well anyway, I think being spontaneous livens up life and helps to make it so much more fun.

With that in mind, here are three quick tips to help you become more spontaneous.

Tip # 1 Don’t Plan Anything

While this may get you into some hot water with your spouse, it does make life more interesting around the dinner table.  Think about all the “I remember when” stories you can tell.  Like the time you forgot to get, the car serviced before leaving on vacation.  So it was a hundred degrees in the shade and you had to wait for a tow truck.  Is that your fault?

On the other hand, how about the time you were supposed to fly to your cousin’s wedding and you waited till the last day to by the airline tickets.  Hey, so it cost you an extra $400.00 per ticket.  At least you had fun, right?

Tip # 2 Do Whatever Comes to Mind

Now this is not to be confused with tip # 1, but you can combine it with tip # 1 if you feel like going on a quick trip or going to Vegas for a quick wedding.  Oh yeah, make sure you car is in good shape.

Doing whatever comes to mind helps you to avoid the worst or all possible scenarios, being bored.  If you never know, what you are going to do next then you can never be bored because you will always be doing something.  Even sitting around doing nothing is still something isn’t it?  It is to me.  I spontaneously sit around and do nothing a lot.  Ask my wife she will tell you.

Tip # 3 Get Rid of Your Things to Do Today List

I don’t know about you but writing a “things to do list’ drives me nuts.  First of you all you must take the time to sit down at your desk and table and jot down everything you can remember that needs to be done.  Of course as soon as you write the list and hang it up you always think of more things to do.

Next, each day you walk past the list, now hung in a prominent place so you can see it, checking to see if you have crossed off any of things you had to do.  Of course most of the time you haven’t, so you beat yourself up over procrastinating, of course you know beating yourself is just figurative, you don’t literally beat yourself up.  Well never mind, this procrastinating goes on for weeks, with you doing everything but what is on the list.  Finally, out of total frustration you rip the list down and throw it out.  Therefore, do yourself a favor and just do whatever comes up, you be better off that way.

While there are more than three reasons to become spontaneous, these three are my favorites.  My only warning is to use them with care, because they may become habit forming.
