To be Prepare or Not, That is The Question

Although there can be no argument towards the value of being properly prepared for any disaster or emergency one has to take a very close look at each scenario as it is being presented. The point I would like to make here is whether a survivalist should be more concerned and prepare for those situations that are more likely to occur rather then those which may or may not ever happen at all. If you were to prepare for the most likely emergency scenario that you can imagine you will probably have most of the equipment and supplies that you would require for the more unlikely crisis.

Following through with this manner of thought, I have to ask if it really makes good sense to concern your survival efforts to cases such as a fatal meteor strike heading towards the earth or perhaps the reactivation of the Yellowstone volcano which has been at rest for hundreds of years. If we merely concentrate upon the crisis situations that we know are possible we would fair much better in the long run.

This is the main reason it is so important to take a good look at the various situations that you will likely acquire in your area of the country. Make a note of those supplies that you may already have on hand and those that you are still lacking.

Any typical scenario which could last for any length of time will naturally require an abundant supply of food. In this case you would be wise to stock up on various food supplies such as canned, dehydrated and possibly even military style MREs.

The mere act of owning some land of your own outside of the city provides you with not only a margin of safety if the situation involved social or civil unrest but also a means of supplying your own food. In short, the further from the population that you are located the safer you will be. In an environment such as this you will probably have a well on your property to provide you with fresh water. You may even place a windmill on your list of items to obtain in order to supply your family with limited electrical power.

Let’s be clear on what we mean when we say long term. By long term we usually refer to a scenario which would extend for at least a year or longer. Of course it would be just about impossible to store up on enough food to last that long. In that case the situation will likely involve growing much of your own consumables. Our hypothetical situation will afford you the opportunity to raise livestock to supplement your food selections. You may possess a cow or two, perhaps some pigs, sheep and a few chickens. At this point you will likely be independent of the system and just about totally self-sufficient.

In the event that you simply can not afford to purchase any land outside the city you can still obtain some basic gardening tools and seeds. Learn how to properly use these tools and practice what you learn.

You will want several good guns that you can use for hunting as well as for self defense. There can be no mistake, times will be rough during those initial months and you will need to be able to protect yourself and your family.

If you happen to reside in an area where tornados are a common occurrence you may wish to consider a storm shelter. Even if you are not located in those locations you may still desire to have such a shelter for storage and added safety. If properly modified storm shelters would make a useful fallout shelter if the time came where you needed one.

On another thought possibly your home is located near to a railroad track. If so, then you might wish to consider what actions you would take in the event a chemical tanker derailment. To me this thought would make me want to obtain chemical suits for the members of my family. It also tells me that I should consider installing some sort of air filtration system on my shelter.

As we all may already realize there are some situations which are likely to occur in life where we simply have no control over however by properly planning for those everyday scenarios that we can control we are that much closer to being prepared for the really unlikely events.
